Are these farts real?

Yes, every single one. That's why it takes so long to reach 1000 recordings.

Were there any sound effects used?

No. All recordings are authentic and unaltered, apart from some occasional trimming. What you hear is what happened.

Is AI involved?

Only in the development of this website. All other content is entirely human-generated.

Why was this archive created?

Someone had to. Despite the enormous amount of content available on the internet, this particular field remains surprisingly underrepresented.

Also, developing custom Joomla extensions for audio archiving and statistical analysis presented some interesting technical challenges.

Why are there less than 1000 farts?

The original plan was to produce 1000 farts before publishing the website. But then, enthusiasm took over, and it was launched earlier.

One day, there will be 1000 farts, though. Currently, there are 918.

New ones are added as they come out.

Who is behind this website?

The identity of the person responsible remains undisclosed. Despite the importance of the work, public recognition is neither expected nor desired.

Being a flatulence enthusiast is often frowned upon nowadays (while flatulists were quite popular in the Middle Ages).

Can I contribute?

No. For reasons of consistency and quality control, all contributions must originate from the same individual.

Is there a quality standard?

Quality varies considerably. Historical significance, however, is not always determined by quality alone.

How were all these farts recorded?

All recordings were made using the iPhone's Voice Memos app. Several generations of iPhones have been involved over the years.

No professional microphones, acoustic treatment, or studio facilities were used. Most recordings were made spontaneously, whenever the opportunity presented itself.

Recording tips

If you intend to record your own winds, avoid positioning the microphone directly in front of the source. The resulting turbulence may cause excessive low-frequency rumbling (as demonstrated in this recording).

Instead, position the microphone at a 45° to 90° angle relative to the gas flow. This generally produces a cleaner, more faithful recording.

Can I use these farts for my own projects?

All farts on this website are licensed under Creative Commons: CC BY-NC 4.0 (Attribution-NonCommercial).

Commercial exploitation requires separate permission. Artistic applications are encouraged.

Does this website collect analytics data?

Yes, but only a small amount. A Thousand Farts uses a small self-hosted analytics system. No visitor data is ever sent to Google or another analytics provider, and no analytics cookies are used.

The site records information such as viewed pages, fart plays and downloads, approximate country, browser language, broad browser and device type, and the hostname of an external referring website. It does not store raw IP addresses, complete browser identification strings, full referrer URLs, names, email addresses, or identifiers that follow visitors from day to day. Daily visitors are estimated using a pseudonymous identifier that changes every day.

How do ratings, playlists and Fart Boards work without a login?

Your Fart Board and playlists are stored in your browser’s local storage, never on our server. They remain available on that particular browser and device, are not tied to an account, and disappear if you clear the website’s stored data. Shared Fart Boards are completely included in the shared link and open as temporary boards, so they do not overwrite your own.

When you rate a fart, your browser creates a random identifier and stores it locally. The server stores only the rating and a cryptographically protected version of that identifier—not the original identifier or your IP address. This allows the same browser to change or remove its rating without requiring an account. The identifier is used only for ratings and is unrelated to the analytics system.
